It Takes a VillageSeventh grade students in Victoria Abdulla's English language arts (ELA) classes at Oneida Middle School recently participated in the kickoff of "It Takes a Village" reading initiative.

The team-wide program, focusing on the important role that independent reading plays in literacy development, brings in community members to talk to students, share experiences and stress the importance of reading for a successful life.

Throughout the year, Ms. Abdulla will welcome guests from the community to share their perspectives and how reading has affected their respective lives.  By hearing community members talk about the importance of reading in their lives, students will be encouraged to connect their reading to their own lives and see the importance for lifelong success.

The program kicked off on Friday, January 27 with an impassioned speech by Dennis Green, assistant director of adult and continuing education at Washington Irving, where he extolled the virtues of reading and the multiple doors that it opened for him.

Students listened attentively as Mr. Green talked about his favorite books, how reading has impacted him and how the right books changed his previously negative view of reading.  Mr Green read a passage from his favorite book, Ready Player One.  He encouraged the students to search for books that they will enjoy as a means to developing a passion for reading.

Ms. Abdulla and students also participated in fun activities and games that promoted literacy.  Prizes were awarded to winners.

According to Ms. Abdulla, the students became energized and are encouraged to become better readers.

Ms. Abdulla will continue to stress the importance or reading throughout the school year and plans to track how many books her students read.

While different members of the community  will bring varying perspectives and experiences to the students, their message will be the same:  reading is a lifelong skill that will open an infinite number of doors throughout life.
