Oneida Students Present Authentic Performance Assessments

Oneida Student Presents His AssessmentGrade 7 students in Ms. Abdulla's ELA spent the day Thursday presenting their unique assessments to fellow students, teachers, administrators and SCSD Board of Education members.  The unique experience allowed students to perform a non-traditional approach to demonstrate their learning, using technological tools and tapping into their personal learning styles.

The assignment, after a long amount of planning by Ms. Abdulla and Ms. Morrow, district instructional coach, was to offer students a choice of assessments in response to a piece of classroom text.  The texts, "All Summer In A Day", by Ray Bradbury, and "Thank You, Ma'am", by Langston Hughes, showed character growth throughout the text.  The students were tasked with continuing the story, demonstrating their understanding of character change and the author's voice.  Students had many options - short story, poem, rap, video, online cartoon, etc.  One student, Owen Oxley, wrote his own video game using Scratch code!

Students were energized by the choices and appreciated Ms. Abdulla's hard work and ability to allow students to let their personal learning styles show.  One student, Shakee Scott, appreciated the ability to be able to rap for his assessment.  "I get to spit bars in English class!" he exclaimed.

A huge thanks to Superintendent Spring, Board Members John Foley and Ann Reilly, ELA Department Chair Kerri Messler, Social Studies Department Chair Carmella Parente, Mr. Farina, Mr. DeLorenzo and more for attending!
